Believe it or not, goal achievement is one of the most common impediments to future success. Human minds are wired to generate additional energy when intensely connected to goals which are important to them. This “energy” comes in the form of additional chemical releases from our brain. Think of long-distance runners whose bodies generate a final dose of adrenaline launching them across the finish line in a sudden burst of speed. We often describe the symptoms of these chemical releases as “motivation,” “enthusiasm,” or “focus.” Unfortunately, once the goal is behind us (accomplished or not) those chemical boosts subside if the goal isn’t replaced with an equivalent challenge. In the absence of challenging goals, we feel the lack of chemical boosts, which we experience as a “crash” or “demotivation.” Many who become sick after pushing towards a goal, attribute this to having worked their body too hard in the final push, not realizing perhaps their current lack of goal clarity is robbing their body of the vital energy to which it had grown accustomed.
As a coach who understands the impact of consistent engagement, I help my clients maximize the advantages of constant connection to goals. Maintaining a balanced focus on current goals, while also planning for future goal achievement allows high level performers to operate in a perpetual state of flow. If you’ve recently accomplished a major goal, or if you’re mapping out your next accomplishment, I’d love to connect and hear your story.
